Are You Climbing the Right Mountain?

This weekend, while walking in the Tatra Mountains at the Poland–Slovakia border, I found myself thinking about peaks — not just in nature, but in business.

The highest mountain in Poland is Rysy, just under 2,500 meters. Right across the border, on the Slovakian side, is Gerlach — the tallest in the Tatras — standing around 2,650 meters.

Now here’s the interesting part: once you reach Gerlach, there’s simply no higher peak in that range. You’ve reached the local maximum. But shift your location — let’s say to the Alps — and suddenly you’re surrounded by dozens of peaks above 3,000 meters, with Mont Blanc reaching over 4,800. And in the Himalayas? Everest towers above them all.

The same applies to business.

You might be the best at what you do in your current niche or market — at the very top of your game — but if the “mountain range” you’re climbing is limited in height, so is your potential.

The real question is: are you playing in a field that truly matches your ambitions?

Sometimes, even if it means stepping into a bigger, more competitive space, repositioning your business or expanding your definition of your market can give you access to a higher peak. A greater challenge, yes — but also far more room to grow.

So, as you take your summer walks, your well-earned breaks, or your mountain hikes — I invite you to reflect:

  • Is the market you’re in the one that gives you space to grow?
  • Have you reached the “Rysy” of your current path?
  • And what would it take to explore your personal “Alps” or “Himalayas”?

Wishing you not only a refreshing vacation, but also inspiring discoveries — about yourself, your business, and the bigger peaks waiting for you out there.
